Zombie Fun
Do you have nightmares? I do. Nightmares... That will haunt me for a lifetime. Stories that cannot be explained and weird situations that NOBODY should face.
I've been haunted for more than I can imagine...
Today was the day! Finally, in the eventual summer-time, school had been released, as it was the last day. I smiled in my entirety, and ran out of the side doors of my school. The day was bright and welcoming to the new vacation. "Yes! I'm finally done with the 7th grade!" I thought to myself.
My headphones wrapped around my head tightly and whispered music into my ears while I began to walk home. Kids passed by me joyfully, as I stared up at the sky, the clouds running along the length of the world. All was good, and I couldn't wait to go home and hang out with my boyfriend, Casper. Tons of fun thoughts ran through my head, as I wondered what we would be doing in my new home.
I recently moved, and my bedroom was much larger, so we had more space to jump around and be stupid. "We could play some old games on my phone's emulators. "Maybe some Pokémon!" I thought. Either way, whatever we would play, I was happy to hang with Casper.
But something pulled at my gut. Something told me secretly to not invite him over, and to just... Go to sleep. To not pay attention to the world and to just forget the day ever happened. Then again, I only thought it was my regular self, always being tired. Yet, I had a feeling that it wasn't that...
Recently, I had some crazy experiences, seeing things at night and hearing things before I go to bed. Those actions soon led to recurring nightmares, and the nightmares consisted of the same thing. My friends and family, turning on me. Now, I have some problems with abandonment, and I do fear being left alone, so this haunted me more than it should have. But, those thoughts aside, I reached my destination.
My mom wasn't home, which surprised me, because she said that she quit her job. But I didn't care that much. I just wanted Casper to come over, so we could have a grand old time. I called him up, and he came over as soon as possible, gleaming with excitement and joy. In his hands, held a bag full of 3DS and DSi games that he had collected over time.
We rushed upstairs and into my room, him setting down his bag, and me jumping into my bed. We chuckled and smiled as I grabbed my phone and started up a Sega Genesis emulator, Gensoid. "Dude, you wanna play some Sonic and Knuckles?" I said, showing him the title screen of the game, as I already started it up. "Yeah!" He said.
We both kept close, lying together and staring at my Android's screen. I went to my saved points, and tapped my last save file. But it didn't load, it just showed a black screen, with a red text box with white letters reading, "Error file 666 not found." I was unsure of what it meant; maybe it was a game error, or maybe an emulator error. I wasn't a tech person, so I couldn't possibly know what it meant, game-wise or emulator-wise.
Either way, I sighed and decided to restart the game, hoping it would work again. Casper waited patiently beside me, as he didn't like to speak very much. As I reset the rom, a text box appeared. It read, "Are you ready to help defeat Robotnik, and save Sonic?"
What? I was so confused, and so was Casper. "Hey, uh, is this part of the game?" He turned to face me. I shook my head, pretty sure that it wasn't. We both focused back to the screen, as the screen changed. Instead of the regular Sonic popping up into the screen, it was Knuckles who had appeared. He looked kind of bummed out, his head hung low and his eyes closed. He also looked slightly pained, as if something terrible had happened.
The music was slightly distorted, but still sounded mostly normal. The background was still its happy and cheerful state, so the only thing that seemed out of place, was Knuckles. I tried to look past that, and continued onto the game. The game started up normally from there, despite there being Knuckles instead of Sonic. A level labeled "Zombie Fun ACT 999" had popped up onto the screen.
Was this a joke? "Hey, Casper... You think we should continue this weird hacked game, or maybe we should just play Minecraft?" I turned to him, my hands shivering from the progressively cold phone in my hands. "Nah, keep going, this looks really cool!" He smiled and kissed my cheek lightly as I shrugged, and turned back to the screen.
Knuckles was a bit duller. His coat of fur being a bit more grey than red. Just as the opening screen, he did look a bit forlorn. But we treaded on forward just to see that there were... New enemies? These enemies were definitely forces to be reckoned with. They looked terrifying, even in their 16 bit forms. Moving on with the strange level, the background soon became more colorful, and smoothly animated.
It looked a bit like a hallucination, feeling a bit weird, and the enemies soon dispersed from the level, as well as the obstacles, leaving me with a long, empty level. The background stayed in its hallucinogenic state, making me feel quite queezy. At the end of the level, we reached a boss stage. There was an extremely obese Robotnik, his fat practically dripping out of his mobile machinery.
As he flew down on his helicopter thingy, into his car, the car exploded due to his massive weight. His eyes grew narrow, and Knuckles began to work on his own. He took out a club, a rather large one at that, filled with spikes. He began to beat the rotund Robotnik with said club, splattering a few drops of pixelated blood around the two. I cringed at the sight, seeing as it was a bit too graphic for the regular games.
Knuckles yelled "WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO SONIC!" as he beat Robotnik, the cry being loud and powerful, yet pixelated and distorted to fit the game's standards. I turned to Casper for reassurance that I wasn't alone, still facing my phone, yet cuddling up to him. "Hey, Caspie, maybe we shouldn't really..."
I was cut off unfortunately at a shrill cry coming from my phone, probably coming from Robotnik, seeing the painful beating he was getting from Knuckles. It scared me, as I wasn't expecting it. I yelped as I quickly fled of my calm collectiveness as I jumped into Casper's arms for protection, dropping the phone onto my body. Casper's body felt cold, though. Almost... Dead.
I looked up quickly, to see what was wrong, and saw my boyfriend's eyes rolled into the back of his head, showing only the whites. "No... What the hell did that game do to him?" Casper groaned in pain, as I quickly moved back, off of the bed, and away from him. "S-Stay away!" I yelled at him as I backed away into my closet, locking it from the inside.
My computer was on, as my closet was big enough to hold my own PC, and it was on my recent conversation with my best friend, Cynthia, before we had left for school. I merely glanced at it as I heard a groan, and a pounding on the door. "A game that possesses and zombifies people..? What the fuck?" I thought to myself out loud as I tried to think of possible ways to get out of this situation. No doors besides the one I had just come from, and no windows either! I just had to defend myself.
I quickly ran from the door to grab the nearest heavy object, which was conveniently a hammer, (I had been nailing a few things to my wall) and charged out the door. "GRAAAAAAAAH!!" I screamed as if I were in battle, as my boyfriend wrapped his already shriveled up fingers around my leg, and nearly bit me. Before he had sunk his teeth into my soft flesh, I quickly bashed his head in with my weapon, letting out a mysterious and potent odorous green goop, from his carcass. Brains oozed out onto my floor, but I mashed his head in a few more times just in case.
Tears streamed from my eyes as I watched my boyfriend get brutally murdered as a zombie form, but when I was done pounding his brains in, I tried to wipe my tears away. "F-Fuck..." I whispered silently as I stared as his body. I turned to face my bed, the demonic rom still playing its dreary music. I dropped the weapon and climbed onto my bed, grabbing and staring at the phone.
The emulator had disappeared completely at that moment, and my phone had shut off. Upon turning it back on again, the emulator was wiped from my phone's memory, as well as the rom itself. "Who would do this to me?" I thought. I have no enemies, because I'm not that bad of a person, though a few popular, stuck up kids may have it out for a nerdy and more friendlier person like myself, but they were probably all too stupid to really know how to hack a game, much more possess and zombify a human being.
Nobody was a genius, we were only 7th graders, ranging from 12 to 13, and most of us cared more about social popularity, more than video games, unlike myself, where as I was OBSESSED with video games, and staying inside on the internet all day.
I sighed, and got up off of my bed. Grabbing my boyfriend's carcass, I dragged it over to my window, opening it, and disposing of his body, clean out of my bedroom. Although there was a trail of sticky, green goop, leaking from his cranium, I merely payed little to now attention to it, even though it was getting all over my pants. Once the body had left my home, I shut my window, and locked my door. I kept my weapon close to me, as I plugged my phone into charge beside me. "Maybe if I go to sleep, this will all go away..." I sighed as I quickly fell into a deep sleep.
"Hey, wake up!" I heard, as my boyfriend was shaking me to wake up. He had a concerned look on his face. "Are you okay?" He asked as my eyes shot open. I felt cold, and I was shivering. I looked at my hands and sat up; I was okay. I felt cold and hot, and my stomach was doing twists and turns. "What... Happened?" I asked him, as I looked around, seeing my phone on the ground, and the goop that supposedly was there, gone.
"You're healed? What?" I got up, off the bed, and looked around, any signs of anything happening before, removed. "Wow." I said to myself. "You passed out on top of me after you gave me a turn to play, and then started murmuring in your sleep... I thought you were having a nightmare, so I woke you up." He said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Oh, uhm... Thanks." I sighed.
For the rest of the day, we talked, snuggled, and played video games. It was a regular day, but the nightmare I had kept nagging me at the back of my mind. Once the day had passed, it was time for Casper to head home. "I'll cya tomorrow, okay?" Casper smiled and kissed me on my cheek as he ran out of my house, his bag full of games clunking beside him.
As I waved goodbye, I closed my door and headed upstairs, exhausted. I was surprised that there was no sign of my mom anywhere, because she would be at home by now, definitely, but I didn't think of it that much. "She's probably in her room, sleeping." I thought out loud. I slipped into my bed, without thinking another thought, with my phone beside me. The remains of the nightmare I had earlier, had only clouded up my head more, but I merely scoffed it away.
Although... Before I slipped into my deep slumber, I could have sworn that I heard a faint and soft scream from my phone, and a groan in my mom's room, similar to the one my boyfriend had emitted in my nightmare... But, it's only my imagination, right?
