The Mario Party DS Anti Piracy Incident
Hello, my name is Mike, and I'm around 20. Do you remember Mario Party DS? It was the 2nd Mario Party handheld game, which of course was on the Nintendo DS. It released on November 8th, 2007. When I first got it at 7, I loved it so much that I would play it everyday when I got home from school. After a few months I got tired of it and didn't play it for 13 years. I now have a girlfriend named Carly and I had two jobs. One of them was pirating games and the other one is testing upcoming games. However, this incident scared the heck out of me for pirating my favorite game that I grew up with. So here's how it started.

13th October
One day at my 1st job, I was pirating games as usual without getting caught by the police. Our boss said that we need to make a pirate copy of your favorite game during childhood. So I pirated my copy of Mario Party DS and waited until I got home. When I got home my girlfriend asked me, "How was work?" I said that it was ok and that I was gonna be busy for a while. I rushed up to my room quickly with my DS and inserted the pirated copy of Mario Party DS. I turned on my DS and selected the game. When I saw the title screen it gave me good memories of that game. I pressed start and picked Mario while the CPUs picked Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. Everything was going fine until the minigame happened.
The minigame was "Cherry Go Round" and I was ready to use the stylus. When the minigame said start I spin the stylus quickly. After a few seconds the game crashed with two error messages. One of them said, "Exception Error has occurred. Turn off the power and destroy the game card". The other one said "Software Piracy Detected" and also forced me to turn the game off. Then it fades to a black screen for a few seconds until the anti piracy screen shows up. It showed Mario and his friends in jail which was taken from the intro of the game.
There was text that said "Piracy Is No Party! It is a serious crime to pirate video games. Please turn off the system and report this stolen software now". It also told me to contact Nintendo's website for more information. I was terrified of this and it wasn't helping when creepy music started to play. I turned off the game and went to bed early because I had a busy day there.
17th December
Sorry for not posting for 2 months because I was extremely busy with my life and I had no time to work on it. After all of that for 2 months, I managed to get the music during the anti piracy screen and burn it on to a CD player. I played it on my CD player and the music turned out safe with no damages. But during the middle of the track there was police sirens and a female Japan voice saying "Software Piracy is a serious crime! Please turn off the system". After that I just took the CD out and put it somewhere safe.
20th December
Ok so I was playing that pirated copy of Mario Party DS again and this time I was playing as Luigi. It was my turn so I decided to go to the Monty Mole item shop and visit by taking the warp pipe. When I got there he greed me a welcome but then things turned different. He then said "Oh I'm terribly sorry, I don't serve criminals". Luigi then got kicked out of the shop as the screen fades to black. When it faded back in it was a boss minigame that was never in the game before. It was titled "RUN" and it had no controls at all. When it started it showed a giant Monty Mole chasing down Luigi. Of course there was no controls, so Luigi was just stuck there.
Eventually the giant Monty Mole caught up to Luigi. Then the game crashed with the error message being the sprite being missing. With another Software Piracy Detected. I turned off the game and decided to take a walk.

Well something weird just happened recently. So I was in the minigame called "Rail Riders" and I was playing Luigi again. The CPUs this time were Peach, Wario and Mario. After it started, Luigi quickly lost speed. The game crashed again with the same Software Piracy Detected. I just turned the game off and told myself that I regretted pirating my game from my childhood.
22nd December
Ok so something crazy just happened and it happened during the "Final 5 Frenzy". Of course I was playing as Luigi again and the CPUs this time were Waluigi, Yoshi, and Daisy. By the way, it happens during the last 5 turns of the game, trying to give a bonus in last place. It started out being normal as usual, but it turned into something different. Yoshi was in 1st, Daisy was in 2nd, Waluigi was in 3rd and Luigi was in 4th. Luigi was summoned before Bowser is given the roulette spinner screen but instead of helpful bonuses like giving more coins or stars it was just Thwomp as the only result. Of course with all of the results was Thwomp, I had to pick it.
Bowser said, "Criminal chumps like you have no place in this party! Get out of here!". After that a Thwomp crashed down on Luigi. Bowser said, "How's that for generosity? Bwahaha!". Of course I got another Exception Error and Software Piracy Detected. I turned off the game and went to bed again.
27th December
Something strange happened yet again. This time the characters were gone except for Luigi and the CPUs this time was Peach, Waluigi and Toad. It happened during the turns and it was Peach's turn but she was gone with a text box saying "Looks like Peach doesn't want to party... Too Bad!". Next it was Waluigi's turn but he was also gone with another textbox saying "Waluigi isn't here... Too bad!". Then it was Toad's turn but of course he was gone with yet another textbox saying "Toad is gone... Too bad!".
Finally it was Luigi's turn and he was the only one there. A textbox appeared saying "Slow your roll, Luigi! You're the only player left on the board! Where did everyone else go? They all left! Nobody wants to party with a criminal". The blue space opened like a trap door and Luigi fell. Yet again another Exception Error and Software Piracy Detected. I turned off the game yet again because I got tired of seeing the anti piracy screen over and over again.

2nd January
This day scared the shit out of me. So I was playing that pirated copy again and the minigame this time was "Sweet Sleuth". The CPUs were Mario, Toad and Peach. The minigame started. I feed the Shy Guy some candy as usual with the stylus, but after two pieces of candy, something creepy happened. The Shy Guy wanted Luigi instead of candy and there was static where it got louder as Luigi was close to the Shy Guy. Eventually, Luigi reached to his hand and then the Shy Guy grabbed him and ate him. With the usual Software Piracy Detected. I shut off the game and went on the Internet to see if there was any information of this pirated game and found out that this different version of the minigame is only exclusive to some pirated copies of the game, and I had one of them. I don't know how many pirated copies were made, but I think some of them are on eBay by an unknown person.
8th January
Ok so I did more research and I found something strange on YouTube. It showed someone clicking the link in the anti piracy screen and it had a site named "Nintendo Anti Piracy Self Reporter". Then a phone call ringed and said "911 what's your emergency?" I paused the video and turned off my laptop so I don't wanna get caught.
10th January
Ok so I burned another CD for the "Nintendo Anti Piracy Self Reporter" music. So I listened to it and it was good music but when I played in reverse it said "Report this stolen pirated copy". After that I took the CD out and put it in with the other CD (a few weeks ago) was.
17th January
Ok so a week later I found something strange again. This time it happened during the "Score Shuffle" mode. I was still playing as Luigi and the CPUs this time were Mario, Yoshi and Toad. I was seeing how much points I managed to get during the "Cherry Go Round" minigame. The points I got were 585 while the CPUs got 4 digit numbers. Then the game said this: "Let's catch a quick word with Luigi! How are you feeling about that shuffle? Oh, off your game you say? Could it be because your copy of this game is illegitimate? Luigi, a good host doesn't let things slide we're all about personality".
After that the game cut to black and into another minigame that I never seen before. It was a boss minigame called "Host Hoedown" and it was playing that same music just like the anti piracy screen that still annoys me now. But the text was in Japanese (I don't learn Japanese so I couldn't understand what it said) and the only controls were the stylus. There was also a mysterious shadow character that looked like a different Mario Party host. As soon as I pressed start the game crashed with a "Stack Overflow" error and another "Software Piracy Detected".
Then it showed that stupid anti piracy screen again, so I just turned off my game. I was confused about that Japanese text and I wanted to do some research to try to figure it out to see what it said. So far the Japanese text is a mystery for now and maybe someone will solve it. But for now it remains a mystery...
23rd January
Well it's been a few days and I managed to get in that "Host Hoedown" boss minigame for once. Once the boss minigame started, Luigi was in a pitch black area with the only light being pointed at him. Then a text box appeared that said "DJ Hallyboo is upset!". I realized he was from one of the GameCube Mario Party games that I also grew up with. Another textbox appeared saying: "As the host, he takes it personally when someone tries to play for free. It would be best to offer a formal apology for what you've done". After that the room dimed the lights on which revealed to be an impostor or someone looking like DJ Hallyboo because for some reason his hat's face was making a creepy smile and Hallyboo himself had those red eyes.
Yet another textbox appeared saying: "Good luck, Luigi". Next the screen faded to black for a few seconds and faded back in. The music started to play and there was a textbox that said: "Trace your apologies on the Touch Screen before DJ Hallyboo attacks! But be aware! He won't go easy on you!". The boss minigame started and there were words for me to trace that said "I'm sorry". I wrote "I'm sorry" with the stylus and he started singing to attack but the words hit him. There was another one tracing saying "never again" and I wrote "never again" with the stylus. He started singing again and nearly started an earthquake but the words hit him again.
This is where things took a turn for the worse. The music slowed down and the word to trace this time said "criminal". I tried to write it on the stylus but it was moving too fast and DJ Hallyboo started another earthquake by singing. After a few seconds a Thwomp squishes Luigi with a textbox saying "Internal Error" and another "Software Piracy Detected". I turned the game off and I wondered how did this boss fight get in the game? I will probably find out someday...
24th January
I found out that the boss battle was unfinished and cut during development. For some reason it made it's way into those pirated copies of the game. I liked the boss minigame music though and I decided to give it one more go at making a soundtrack to listen in my CD player. I made a CD disk that had the boss minigame music in it. I pressed the button and it seemed good until near 1:50 when I heard that stupid Japanese lady speaking. I took it out of the CD player and put it in the safe with the other 2 CDs I had in there.
30th January
I was playing one of the game modes called "Rocket Rascals" I was on the 4 out of 20 turns and I placed the last piece to get into the rocket. I managed win and I was like yes I finally won with this stupid pirated copy. I was wrong because the rocket was going down instead of up. The screen faded to black with a textbox saying: "You can be a rascal, Luigi but you can't be a criminal". I had another stupid "Software Piracy Detected". I turned the game off and I was like WTH was that for!?.
I did some research and it turns out that there was gonna be an alternate ending to this game mode but it got cut. Of course this was in the pirated copies of the game too.
8th February
Sorry for not responding for 2 weeks and I tried to hide from the police but they found me. I was arrested because I pirated my game and now I'm going to jail. How did they find me? Then I heard the cop saying we saw your videos you were recording and that stupid self reporter actually worked! I was forced into the police car and I said do I get a phone call? The cop said you will once we get to the police station.
14th February
It's been almost week since I'm in prison and the cop handed me a normal gamecard to play on meaning I don't have the pirated copy in my hands since the cop took it for evidence. I'll probably be in prison for a few years or so but I'll keep you guys updated once in a while.
