The Madness
May 16th, 2011
I just got Minecraft! I'm extremely excited; I've been saving up for the game since I lost my job at retail. That's okay, though, since I can now dedicate my time to playing this awesome game. For now, I'm locking my bedroom door with my stock of food and supplies to play my marathon. I've decided to start tonight at 12; this is going to be fun!

I'm now forever obsessed with Minecraft. I haven't even stopped playing yet. Never had I eyed that padlock on my bedroom door, just the glowing screen on my laptop under the covers with a bag of chips beside me. I heard the phone ring a couple times, but who cares? I'm glued to Minecraft. Maybe I should get some sleep now. Perhaps, after I build my castle.

I haven't gotten any sleep. I began to hate the glowing red digital clock beside me. That hate built up to the point when I smashed it to the floor. I didn't need time to govern me. More Minecraft after my restroom break...

I've began to see glimpses of creepers in my messy bedroom. Sometimes the occasional spider or skeleton pop out, maybe on my bed. I try my best to make them disappear, and they would. But they come back, more often than before. What is going on? I try not to worry. I really should get some sleep now. Ooh, diamonds!

My food and supplies are running out. I haven't planned on playing this long. My arms are flabby and my stomach is bigger; after all, I've only been eating junk food the past- what, 14 days? Wow. I've been trapped here for two weeks. And the monsters are more frequent; they're more than outlines now, they're fully realized figures. I can observe the pixelization of a creeper perfectly. It's harder for me to make them disappear now, for some reason. I can even see them trying to kill me sometimes. Of course it doesn't work. Back to Minecraft.

I weighed myself today. 191 pounds. I was 178. For the first time, I looked at the padlock. Should I get out right now? Work out in a gym? I stared at my bed; I should take a nap now.

I can't sleep. I always wake up screaming. I imagine Endermen taking me in to the Nether. That's it; I can't sleep. Strangely I had the nature to punch my furniture in my bedroom. What? Or craft a sword with my blocky hands. What is wrong with me?

I'm getting out of my bedroom. For the first time since May something, I'm closing my laptop. I headed for the door, but I was stopped by an Enderman. He stared at me, and I blacked out. I didn't wake up again until later, when I swung the door open, screaming, to my living room. I swore they were chasing me, I had to go somewhere, away from those blasted monsters. But where to?

I knocked on Veronica's door. She was my friend, and was quite surprised to see me, a stub on my face, crazy eyes, my shirt tight around my new fat chest. I pleaded her to let me in. Like any good friend, she let me in without asking for an explanation. I just had to get away from them. I asked her if I could stay the night, and she readily agreed. I just needed a safe place away from them.

I awoke to a sound of hissing. I screamed at the looming figure of a creeper to my left; I rolled to my right before it could explode. No, no, no, they found me! They found me! That's when my head snapped behind me, the light of a gleaming screen:
It was my laptop.
I screamed at the top of my voice as I rushed toward the laptop to destroy it, monsters surrounding. I could barely hear Veronica dashing into my room, asking what was wrong. I choked out, "They're here! They're here to take me to the Nether! Go away! GO AWAY!" My vision blurred as I was knocked to the ground, their grubby limbs grabbing at me, as I whimpered for them to kill me...
END OF JOURNAL

Veronica entered the dim room where her insane friend rested. A couple of doctors acknowledged her approach, and becknoned her toward the lump on the cot. She pulled the blanket off his face. He was sleeping, his hair a wild mess, a scrawly beard on his cracked face, etched and contorted by madness.
"He had lost weight," explained the taller of the two doctors, anticipating her question. "He refuses to eat, saying that the spiders have contaminated it with their venom."
"Spiders," Veronica repeated.
"He wakes up at night, and does punching motions. He says he's keeping the monsters away from taking him," said the other doctor.
"But will he be alright?" Veronica asked. It was an answer she already knew.
The doctors didn't respond, and both left the room in a haste. She stared down at the broken body of her childhood friend. He was now insane, and Minecraft had destroyed him. His madness held his death, a dark power that broke him forever.
