The Cell Phone
I'm what you would call a "scaredy cat" or a "coward"; someone who is very very easily frightened. And that's only scraping the surface. As a child I was afraid of silly things like the sight of blood, or a monster that I swore crawled out from under my bed. As I reached the fifth grade I swore I had some encounters with ghosts. Finally reaching a more mature age however I decided those fears were stupid, and I could brave anything. I was wrong, for even the sillier Creepy Pastas left me awake at night. All those stories I read, I thought they couldn't be true, and if they were nothing like that would affect me right? Wrong.
It was about two and half months ago from today when I decided to purchase a new phone, my cellphone was dated and due for an upgrade. I was eager, a new phone and hopefully a data plan would make the second month of school a little more tolerable. I walked into the store and browsed the phones on display. I didn't have the budget for a smart phone, and was hoping to find a newer model of the phone I had. To my dismay however none of the phones on display could fit my demands. As a last resort I went to the manager and asked him if he had any phones that matched my description.
"Well," he paused for a minute thinking, "I think I might have just the thing." He disappeared into the back of the store, and a moment later reemerged with a box in his hand. In it was the phone of my dreams, and I fell in love with it as soon as he took it out of the box. Ten minutes later it was paid for, a contract was signed, and I was on my way.
For a while everything was going great, it was working better than my old phone and I wasn't experiencing any glitches. The software was easy to use and manage, transferring my old data and contacts was a synch, and calls were now clearer and crisper. Things seemed perfect... but of course they wouldn't stay that way. If they did I wouldn't be sharing this story.
I started to notice a trend of weird things a couple weeks later. The screen, for one, would come on by itself. It wouldn't be triggered by an alarm, a call, or a text; it just seemed to do it on its own. A couple of years ago my grandpa had warned me that people could hack your phone so they could hear you through the microphone and see you through the camera. One of the ways to tell if your phone had been compromised was that your screen would turn on by itself. The thought crossed my mind, but I blew it off. After all who would want to sit and listen to me for hours? In fact most of the time I'm quiet. The camera is often face down too so there would be nothing to look at either.
Then things started to take a more interesting development. Two before the event you see I every time I would try to contact one of my good friends, Jordan, the phone would mess up. It never failed. I would try to text her, but the phone would go to contacts instead. I would try to send her a message, but another incoming message always seemed to disrupt it, or it would just flat out fail. I once got a message from her, but phone vibrated for half a second, and closed the message on its own. I had to go dig into my inbox to find it. For every other person it worked fine... it only seemed to be her.
That's when I had got to thinking that I hadn't seen her days, much less heard from her. A dark thought crossed my mind; what if something had happened to her? Wouldn't I have heard about it? I considered us to be pretty great friends. I decided to give her a call, but a deep strange voice came on the line instead of a ring when I dialed my number. "Hang up now..." It repeated over and over. My heart started racing as I threw the phone across the room and start trembling violently. As I stated before I am truly a frightful person, and hearing that voice did everything but give me a heart attack. Tears were forming in my eyes; what horrible joke was this? Had someone decided to exploit my easy fright for personal amusment? I wish that would've been the case.
That night I left the phone where it was and slept in a different room with as many lights on as I could manage. I know this sounds like I'm overreacting a little, but you must keep in mind that things like Slenderman and Smile.dog give me the creeps. I was a kid afraid of monsters for crying out loud. Anyway my biggest mistake was not destroying that phone what I would've. In my defense at the time I was so freaked out that I didn't want to be anywhere near it. I also hypothesized that perhaps it was the other line's problem, and had nothing to do with my phone. Again, I was wrong.
Not destroying the phone when I had the chance was my biggest mistake by far. My biggest regret. I decided to clear my mind by getting on my computer, the internet was a distracting place after all, and perhaps I could get in touch with my boy friend to comfort me. God knows I wasn't going to call him. My homepage popped up, facebook, and the first update I saw made my heart sink. It appeared that Jordan had died in a car accident two days ago. It didn't seem right, I had been receiving texts from her the last two days. In fact it was in those last two days that my phone started glitching whenever I tried to talk with her. And then I put the pieces together. Whatever I had been talking to wasn't Jordan.
That's when I decided to go back for the phone and destroy it. I braved up the encouraged and started to walk into the room. My body was shaking, and tears were forming in my eyes. I could hear every creak in my house. 'It's just a phone' I kept telling myself in a futile attempt to calm myself down 'it can't hurt you'. I walked into the room and saw the phone's screen was on. I took a step, but stopped. It started vibrating uncontrollably, and opened itself up going straight to speaker phone. "Emily, Emily, Emily" a deep feminine voice repeated my name over and over. I couldn't move, I couldn't even scream, my whole body trembled. My heart was racing faster than it should've been.
Suddenly a bright light flashed forcing my eyes shut, and when I opened them I saw something terrible standing in front of me. It was Jordan, only she was crawling on the floor. Her eyes were empty sockets, her skin was pale, and her lips were formed into a smile. She crouched and looked up straight into my face with sightless eyes. I thought I was going to faint, but somewhere I mustered the courage to keep myself awake.
"I'm hungry," she smiled, her voice was deep and screwed, "Make me bacon."
I stood there unable to move, not even able to process the demand, the very strange demand.
"I said," Her voice changed now, it was angry low and demonic, "Make. Me. Bacon."
I screamed, I regained control of my body and ran as fast as I could to the kitchen. There I opened the refrigerator and in haste took out as much bacon as I could. There was sweat dripping down my face, and tears from my eyes as I sobbed. The next thing I recall is actually making the bacon.
"Make it crispy," the demon of my friend demanded. I continued to cook it, my heart racing. From the corner of my eye I could see her on the ceiling staring at me through sightless eyes. She was just staring, her lips didn't even make any expression. The next thing I knew however she had a flute in her hands, and the next thing I heard was her playing the Lavender Town music as I made the bacon.
All the hairs on my neck rose, that did the trick, I was going to die, I just knew it. However to my delight when I looked at the bacon it was crispy and done. The Jordan demon seemed to take notice. She stopped playing and jumped down from the ceiling eagerly gobbling to bacon.
"Thank you," she said smiling. Somehow I mustered up the courage to respond.
"How did you... text me... and talk to me on the phone... or why did you... if all you wanted was bacon... and you could come here at any time..." "What?" the demon Jordan looked dumbfounded, "I never contacted you through the phone. I decided to come back from the dead to visit my great friend and scare her into making me bacon ya idiot. Anyway later." And the next thing I knew she was gone.
To this day I wonder, and the question never leaves my mind.
Who was phone?
