The Attic

My mother had died recently and left an old house to me. At night I would hear little creaks and groans but passed it off as the house settling. Until one night...

But to understand what I am talking about, let's rewind four months prior the incident.

My mother was a woman who had... issues. Her mind had slipped after the death of my father who she saw as her only companion. I was an only child so I had to watch her. There were times where she would have episodes and forget everything going on around her or just go comatose. The doctors said she wouldn't have long to live since her mind was deteriorating to the point of no return.

There were times she would sit in her room and "talk" to my father. Right before my father had his heart attack, she put all her worldly possessions in the attic. She sealed it up the day he died and refused to go in there and never let anyone set foot near the entrance. One day, I went out to get her prescriptions which only took me twenty minutes to do.

When I got back to the house, there was a heavy feeling in the air. A feeling of dread, depression.... and death. I went to her room and she wasn't there. There was a note on her bed that said "I can't stay away from them anymore. My precious memories are calling me to them." I dropped the note and ran to the attic doorway which was now torn open.

The door frame looked like someone tried to claw it down with their bare hands because I found a nail and blood on it. I walked up the stairs slowly, not knowing what to expect. The boxes that had my mothers treasures were scattered about. It looked like she was trying to find something.

I searched the attic and finally found her as I sank to my knees. She lay on the ground with a picture of my father, her lover, her one true friend in life. The one person that was with her in death. The color in her face was drained and her eyes were open with fear. The mortician said her heart suddenly stopped as if she saw something that scared the life out of her.

Two months later, the attic was calling me up there. The whispers came out at night. Softly requesting my presence. I tried to wait as long as I could and only made it for another two months. I made my way up the familiar stairs, now knowing the essence up there. As I made it to the top, my parents were standing side by side, smiling at me. They will find my body by the next evening. I plan to join them and make the family whole once again. They say hi by the way. Their bodies are sitting right beside me although now-a-days my father is getting to be so skinny he almost resembles a skeleton. My mom is still as beautiful as ever though. Their obituaries are framed and hanging above their beds. I lay down in mine. I say goodnight as their shadows consume me, taking out the life force left in me as I join them.

"December 18th, 1982

Family found dead in attic. Male, presumably in his late 30's decomposed. Two females, one in her mid 30's who recently died four months ago and the other 13, who seemed to have died last night of unknown causes. No signs of a break in and the only clues of anything is a carving above the bodies "Nos sunt simul" "We are together."

"December 20th, 1982

Police man found dead where he investigated the death of a family found in their attic. He hung himself on a beam where the family lay."
