Glitch Diary - NOI
What defines a glitch to us? Is it a faulty error in programming? Is it a convenient tool that just screams “GLITCHED!!!” in amusement to our advantage? The answer is both of those, but in this particular situation, there is one glitch that still confuses me, even though it’s more recent, it left me with quite a few fears, and I’ve shared it’s story with friends who have also feared what this glitch has done.
A few weeks ago I decided to replay Red version on an emulator, but I wanted to do something fun. I used Gameshark to obtain MissingNo from the beginning, however… I ended up getting ‘M. But Hey! I was aiming to make this party nifty and use only glitch Pokemon, so getting ‘M was inevitable. I caught a few Pokemon, level grinded enough so I could go face Brock, yep, definitely was able to work with this. With my ‘M named Noi, we were ready to go to town and curb-stomp this game.
I decided to save my game, take a break, eat dinner, then return to playing a bit later.
I continued my game, first thing I did was check the status of my Pokemon to see if my team needed to visit the Pokemon Center.
...
and that… is where things began to take an eerie turn… Where were my other Pokemon? The Charmander I owned up and front in the party at the time was no longer there, I still had my badge, it shows the playtime, not to mention, why was Charmander gone? That was my starter! The only thing left in my party, was Noi.
I decided to check my box in hopes that my Charmander and Pidgey were there. No such luck…they were gone, completely deleted from the game.
Sucking it up, I decided to go catch another Pidgey, leveled it up so much it managed to evolve into Pidgeotto. Unfortunately…I needed to restart my computer because of an update, so I saved, made sure it was saved, and did so. I returned, ready to go face the Lass, the first trainer you’ll run into after leaving Pewter City. I didn’t check my party since I just recently left the Pokemon center, so everything was fine, it was time to start beating up these trainers.
My battle agains the Lass began…and any kind of confidence I had was shot down when I saw these words:
“Go, Noi!”
What? I put Noi in the second slot of my party. Oh well, guess I’ll just switch it. So I hit the switch button… Pidgeotto was gone.
What happened? This is weird… not only that, but Noi was gaining boosted experience now…
That’s when it hit me…
Noi was killing off my Pokemon.
After my match against the Lass, the first thing I did was catch another Pidgey and box away Noi for good, at least…that was the plan. I boxed Noi, attempted to release her, but no…I couldn’t… That was strange… I stepped away from the computer only to be greeted by “Hikko is out of Pokemon! Hikko blacked out.”
Huh? I had Pidgey and- no… I didn’t have Pidgey, Noi was back in my party and Pidgey was gone.
So I decided to continue my game, with only Noi. Took a lot of level grinding and evolution cancels, but I was determined to play through this game with glitch Pokemon. Things were getting weird though… I had odd items in bag, and even the option to access the Trading Center, so for fun I decided to select it…
Everything considered “living” on the screen suddenly vanished, Noi’s cry was heard, and so were the sound effects of cut. Everything went dark on the screen, and suddenly…Lavender Town’s background music played. Well that was creepy… I looked past this and decided to reset and continue.
I made it to Cerulean City, finally. Defeated my Rival, and began my way up Nugget bridge, almost at the Rocket Grunt, I was suddenly stopped by a trainer battle. That was weird… there was no trainer- Oh no, it was the trainer you needed to avoid in order to get Mew… Well, I thought there was another way, so I defeated him regardless.
I then went, to finally catch that Abra I needed in order to pull off the Mew glitch. After I finally managed to catch one, I was hoping to do this cheat all in one sweep, in hopes Noi would be friendly with glitch Pokemon at least.
The screen went black for a few seconds, then returned to the overworld.
Where was I? This wasn’t the tall grass I was just in…it looked like the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, but filled with numbers and tilesets that didn’t belong, I was only forced to walk straight to the right, and then my game froze. I was getting frustrated, I tried again, and ended up getting stuck there for a second time. This time however, I thought I’d be smart and use my escape rope to see if it works… it was gone. I had two escape ropes and never used them, so why were they gone?
This was irritating, but my curiosity was getting the best of me…
So I went back, caught an Abra, and just as I’d have hoped, I was back in what my friend called “Noi’s World”. Ready to exploit the walk-through-walls cheat to it’s fullest. I began walking to different areas, ended up getting frozen, but luckily managed to walk up to an item, now here’s an odd turn of events, slashing, fainting sounds were heard when I pressed A on the item… huh, those cries sounded familliar…Charmander…Pidgey…Pidgeotto? Then suddenly, the Rocket theme music in the background changed to a much slowed down version of the bicycle music. It sounded…almost scary…and seemed like it had a meaning.
I went further down, and saw trainers… Trainers, in this glitched up world?
I decided to turn on the recording, I didn’t wanna miss out on showing my friends this, so off I went to battle all these trainers!
These trainers…were really out of dialogue, or were they? The dialouge went as followed by trainers:
“How did you get here? Brats like you should stay out of our buisiness!”
“You don’t belong here.”
“Why did you come here?”
“Leave this place.”
Here? Where? Were they literally meaning…this glitched up world?
After the last trainer… I went further down, I managed to get teleported infront of the item again, selected it, nothing really changed, continued to the right, and noticed I had further access then before. I took this chance and found a small set of stairs, and I managed to go down it. Is this what they meant by leave?
I was greated by a rocket-like stage, with movement panels and all… It was then, I realized the only way to go was through these, so I stepped on the panel to see what awaited me. It was a trainer battle? nope…no trainer battle, but it was a Lass with some very specific dialouge…
“Do you get it now? You don’t belong here.”
There was a door, I’m guessing she meant for me to leave, so I did, it was then I noticed I couldn’t move, I was stuck, and the screen began to fade once again, only playing what seemed like the slowed down bicycle theme mixed with Lavender Town. Where was I though? I couldn’t go any further than that…Guess I had to reset once again. So I ended my recording and did so…
I went to put the video file into windows movie maker, but was greeted by a message saying the file was corrupted and could not be read… What?… Seriously? It’s a computer file, not something from the game. Well…guess that was a major loss right there…
I continued playing again, and then… during a battle, I decided to open up the items…and the first thing I read on it was…
“Too Bad!!!”
Clearly Noi didn’t want this place to be seen…I managed to get a second recording…but content was missing from the game that made it different the second time.
All I can say is that this is the scariest glitch of all time I’ve ever had to encounter in the game, and I have to say, Noi was the most Yandere Pokemon I’ve ever had… if she wants her trainer to herself… she’ll do anything to make it possible. As for her world… Not a very pleasent place to visit at all.
